The Battle of The Selfie: Statement Earrings

27 August 2018

selfie tips, how to take a selfie, the struggles of photography, tips on selfie photos, hoop earrings, resin earrings,

If you were to tell me 3-4 years ago that “The Selfie” was something I would partake in I would laugh at you with an “um no!”. Yet here I am plastering selfie’s all over the WWW with you guys. It has definitely taken some getting used to considering being in front of the camera was so not my style. But over time it really has gotten easier-ish {like most things do}.

A few weeks ago in efforts to share a new pair of earrings on my Insta-Stories I thought a selfie with me wearing them would be helpful. As much as I would prefer to just take a picture of the earrings on a white fluffy display. I know it’s important sometimes to expose the person behind the project. So I pulled out my phone and started shooting for that shot. About 3o minutes into it I was annoyed and my brain and body hurt!

The technicalities involved to get that one selfie shot is insane! I’m sure it very well could just be me. But seriously sometimes {most times} the shots you see took a gazillion tries. By the end my hand is shaking which only means blurry photos. And quite honestly I’m so over the idea.

But I started to notice that quite often out of the 50 selfie shots I generally went with one of the first 5. Yes! {roll of the eyes} So what that tells me is on the majority I spend {WASTE} 40 + minutes of my very precious time hoping for something that’s not.

More than likely during those first few shots I was my most natural, relaxed in the moment, and unaffected by insecurities. It wasn’t until I started dissecting everything to it’s core that then my shots revealed an awkward un-natural “me”. And since my “me” is my forefront purpose here, it’s an important factor. Not to mention many of those tiny little technicalities that I dissected to it’s core probably would have gone unnoticed.

Not to say that details don’t matter. Because details are actually really important (in my opinion). One just may not realize that tiny detail is what drew you in {or away!}. But seriously in some instances life is just too short for unnecessary nit picking.

I finally came to the conclusion that these 4 points should be considered during those battles with “The Selfie”.

1. Live in the moment. It’s what will translate in its most relatable form.

2. Don’t be so hard on myself. Nobody relates with perfection…it doesn’t exist. So be ok if a flaw you can’t change is exposed. It’s me. They can take it or leave it.

3. Consider the project and purpose. Is it for vogue magazine or my silly in the moment Insta-story? Is the intent of this photo worth the time taken for the details your seeking?

4. Know when it is not meant to be and move on.

Here is a glimpse into the battle I had in order to get that shot for my Insta-Stories.

struggles with selfies, photo insecurities, how to overcome insecurities, tips on taking a selfie

I am very visually stimulated so I completely understand the value of a great shot. But I also understand the value of a real shot.

Live real life. Enjoy real life. Share real life.

Coincidentally a few short days after my little “Selfie” fiasco I saw an Insta-story from one of my favorite bloggers. She was referring to one of her older posts on how to look better in photos. Definitely a helpful read should you care on the subject. I VERY much related from her stance. You can read Garance Dore’s article here.

About my earrings. 🙂 They are my new favorite. They go with just about everything and add just the right amount of something. Unfortunately I can’t find them online; however I am linking a similar {and better} pair as well as a few others I’m loving.

What about you? Do you tend to be super critical with yourself? See any earrings you like?

Love the earrings! Love you!! Don’t see any gray in your sideburns!! Love the beautiful top—light & airy, perfect for August in Texas. Gave up on taking a “good” selfie; just settle for “this will do.”

I am a sucker for beautiful earrings such as these. I haven’t taken a selfie in more than a year, I think. I just can’t get a good selfie and I get very judgemental since I see girls nailing the selfie game. I agree with you, natural and confidence is the most important.

I can only take a selfie with a strange look on my face (opposite of the duck face) and even then I still feel weird about it. I need a serious filter.

Love everything about this post! You explained my battle with the selfie so vividly and it’s funny how what should be a simple thing is turned into something so complicated. Thank you for the helpful tips and I’m all about tortoise earrings! They’ve been my fave this whole season!
